1. Determine which Device to use
Identify which device to use: laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone. Use laptops instead of phones or tablets. If you must use a phone or a tablet, make sure it is stabilized. Do not hold the device, as it will be highly distracting and unprofessional.
2. Test All Devices and Prepare a Backup
You must double-check and test for internet connection, camera, lighting, sound, and video conferencing program before the interview. Double-check that you have the latest version of the software downloaded. Just in case, have a backup device ready.
3. Find the Proper Setting for the Interview
Having a diffused lighting and a plain wall is the ideal location for your online job interview. Make sure that you can be seen on the screen from the waist up. Also, remember to turn off notifications and mute everything on your device that can distract your interviewer.
4. Practice by Recording and Reviewing
Video record yourself answering a practice question, then review how you look and sound. Speak louder and adjust the device if you need to improve the sound. Check that you enunciate clearly and present yourself well. Do not use filler words. Make sure that you do not touch your face or your hair while answering your own practice question.
5. Go the Extra Step to Dress Up
A video interview is a real interview. Dress appropriately for the interview. Make sure to look near and well-groomed. Even if the dress code is business casual for the workplace, show your enthusiasm by dressing up and looking your best. Keep eye contact with the camera, as if you would look directly at the interviewer. Finally, remember to smile. A smile is the best outfit you can wear to exude self-confidence and interest!
