Cover Letter Writing

Once you have created your resume, the next step is to write a cover letter that will attract potential employers to actually look at your resume. The key in writing successful cover letters lies in how well you can catch the reader's attention. Effective cover letters are succinctly written and targeted specifically to the job position. Here are a couple of tips:

  • Try to personalize the salutation by using the name and title of the hiring manager.

  • The opening paragraph of the letter should immediately grab the reader's attention. Concisely mention what job you are applying for, the person who referred you, if applicable, and how your background fits the job requirements. Try to understand what qualities the reader is looking for in a potential candidate and inject those qualities in the first paragraph. Try not use "I" to start the cover letter or to start more than one paragraph in the whole letter.

  • The middle paragraph(s) should explain in detail your qualifications and accomplishments. Explain how your business experiences met or exceeded your company's needs, and if possible, try to quantify your achievements. For example, annual sales grew 35% more with the introduction of a new product marketing plan. Achievements translated into numbers always help potential employers to visualize your record of accomplishments.

  • Insert relevant terminology and information you gathered about the company from newspapers and the Internet. This will show you have done your homework and are interested in the company.

  • The closing paragraph should re-state in a brief sentence your qualities and achievements, and your availability. This will allow the reader to know when to contact you. And remember to end the letter in a professional manner.

Another type of cover letter that can help you customize your resume is an executive briefing. To create an executive briefing, extract the company's requirements for the position and list them on the left hand side of your letterhead. On the right hand side, match your skills and qualifications with each of the company's needs.

Using an executive briefing for experienced professionals can substantially increase the chances of landing an interview. It sends a quick, thorough, and a targeted presentation of your qualifications and how you can fill the current business needs.

Whatever method you choose, always remember that a succinctly written and specifically targeted cover letter can help you land the job that you are looking for!
